Bald Head Island Club
Once you arrive on the new 1st tee at Bald Head Island Club (after the drive to Southport, the fabulous ferry ride across the mouth of the Cape Fear river and the tram excursion from the dock to the BHI Clubhouse!) take a long deep breath (on island time!) and enjoy this George Cobb masterpiece. The relocated 1st tee forces you to carry more water with your drive, but there is ample room to the right. Keep your approach to the elevated green below the hole and all will go well. One of the most important aspects about playing this great ocean links course well, is to tune into the prevailing direction of the wind on the day you select to play. Crosswinds can make the fairways become tight landing areas with severe penalties for offline shots. Especially true on the last seven holes that swing around 360 degrees as the back nine returns to the clubhouse. Keep it in play off the tee and you will be very pleased with your temporary one day membership at this premier island resort destination.
The men’s championship slope rating is 137 and 113 for the ladies as the course flows round freshwater lagoons (with Major League alligators in residence), through a spectacular maritime forest and across windswept dunes…all in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean. The signature par 3 sixteenth hole will break or make your round if you select the right right club! Nature is clearly in charge on the island, with abundant wildlife seen at every turn of the cart-path! relax after your round with a delicious meal in the Bald Head Island Clubhouse or a cool refreshing drink at the poolside.
